Korup National Park was established by
Presidential Decree No.86-1283 on the 30th of October 1986. It is
situated in the South West Province of Cameroon, adjacent to the
international boundary with Nigeria, 50 kilometres inland from the
Bight of Biafra. Korup National Park consists of 1,260 square
kilometres of ancient, mainly lowland rainforest, the southern part
of which is almost certainly primary. KNP is contiguous with Ejagham
Forest Reserve and with Cross River National Park in Nigeria.
OBJECTIVES
Conserve
the biodiversity and integrity of all physical and ecological
processes of Korup National Park now and in perpetuity for the
benefit of the people of the Korup region, the Republic of Cameroon
and the World.
Characterised by high levels of endemism, Korup
is reputed to be the best remaining example of the once widespread
Atlantic Biafran forest of western central Africa and richer than
any other African forest for which comparable data exist.
More than 620 species of trees and shrubs have been recorded
from Korup, almost 30% of them endemic, and at least 480 species of
herbs and climbers. Korup
is the single richest lowland site in Africa for birds, butterflies
and herpetofauna. It also represents a critically important site for primate
conservation supporting healthy populations of a number of
endangered primates including drill, chimpanzee, Preuss’s red
colobus monkey, red-capped mangabey, red-eared monkey and Preuss’s
monkey.
