Challenges
- Sustainability and funding of Mount CEO
- Waste management
- Bush fire
- Developing new tour tracks, campsites, infrastructure
- Sensitisation to the ecotourism concept
- Environmental compatibility
Sustainability and funding of Mount CEO:
From its beginning till 2007, the German Cooperation grants the financial and technical support of Mount CEO. Now, to cover the running costs and realize small scale projects the organisation needs to raise more funds to become sustainable in the future.
Waste management:
Inadequate handling of waste by different users endangers the biodiversity of the mountain region. To avoid further pollution and to improve the present situation, an efficient waste management concept needs to be developed with the Delegation of urban affairs and all other stakeholders concerned. According to a new agreement between the Cameroonian Government and Mount CEO, Mount CEO will in future take a leader role in the monitoring of the mountain. Throughout the year, Mount CEO is carrying out sensitisation work at different levels (village committees, schools, local administration) on waste management, bush fire, water and energy preservation and the idea of Ecotourism.
Bush fire:
At the same time, the development of a sensitisation programme on the damaging effect of bush fires is necessary. Sensitisation programmes against bush fires, which are a result of non sustainable agricultural practises, hunting or harvesting activities, were carried out in 2002 by Mount CEO.
Developing new tour tracks, campsites, infrastructure:
As the number of visiting tourists is increasing yearly and the actual infrastructure on the mountain is in a poor condition, more and improved facilities for hiking and camping become necessary such as permanent huts, drinking water and alternative energy sources. As well, in future, more trails and itineraries have to be developed.
Sensitisation to the ecotourism concept:
Mount CEO will continue to sensitise local communities and especially the administrative authorities to the concept of ecotourism in order to strengthen their commitment and collaboration.
Environmental compatibility:
Mount CEO developed an Ecotourism Environmental Protection Concept. The positively increasing number of tourists might cause environmental and socio cultural damage in the Mount Cameroon Region. Economic previsions show that for the next five years the amount of tourists visiting the Mount Cameroon will not climb above the carrying capacity. A concept how to limit the number of tourists is kept in mind.
